Hi! I’m Serena, a marketing advisor for small businesses
I help small businesses get their marketing right, by looking at things from their customers’ point of view.
SMALL BUSINESS MARKETING CONSULTANT
Good marketing starts from the outside in
You know your business from the inside. You know the quality of what you do, the care that goes into it, the things that make it genuinely worth choosing.
But your customers only ever experience it from the outside. And that experience, from the first time they hear your name to long after they have made a purchase, shapes everything: whether they buy, whether they come back, whether they tell someone else.
Most small businesses are doing more right than they realise. But somewhere between first discovery and a loyal, recommending customer, something gets in the way. My job is to find those things and help you fix them.
WHAT I DO
Marketing strategy grounded in how your customers actually think
I approach marketing the way your customers approach your business: from the outside in. That means before we talk about what to say or where to say it, I make sure we understand what your customers are actually experiencing, when they find you, when they buy, and what happens after.
Most marketing advice starts from the inside: here is your product, here is your message, here are your channels. I start from the other direction. What does it feel like to discover this business for the first time? What happens when someone walks into the shop, lands on the website, receives the order? Where do people hesitate, get confused, or quietly decide to go elsewhere?
That understanding shapes everything: your positioning, your communication, your content, how you present your products, how you follow up with customers, how you ask for referrals. Marketing that’s built around how customers actually think and behave works harder than marketing that is built around internal assumptions.
This is not narrow campaign work. I look across the whole picture, your messaging, your visual presentation, your sales process, your customer communications, your pricing, and help you make decisions that hold together from the customer’s perspective.
HOW IT WORKS
A process built for real businesses

Immersion
I start by going through your business the way your customers do. Every touchpoint, online and in person, before and after purchase. I am looking for what is working, what is getting in the way, and where the real marketing opportunities are.

Strategy
From that understanding, we build a clear picture of what needs to change and why. Positioning, messaging, communications, customer journey. I prioritise by impact and think carefully about what is realistic for a business your size, at your pace.

Implementation
I work with you to put it into practice. I stay close, in your business regularly and available in between, so every decision stays grounded in the strategy we have built together.

Review and refine
Each month we take stock. What has changed, what is working, what is next.
WHO I WORK WITH
Small and medium businesses that care deeply about what they do
I work with businesses selling physical products and services, both B2C and B2B. What they have in common: they are run by people who care about quality, who take pride in what they have built, and who want their marketing to reflect that.
Some come to me with a clear problem: sales have plateaued, new customers are hard to find, they are getting traffic but not conversions. Others know their marketing could be working harder, even if they can’t quite say how.
I am probably not the right fit if you want me to promise big results in a short timeframe. This work takes time and I can promise that I will be thorough, honest, and genuinely invested in getting it right.
WHY ME
Big business thinking, built for small businesses
I genuinely love small businesses. I go out of my way to shop at them, I recommend them constantly and when one closes I feel it. I’m not just saying that. It shapes everything about how I work with clients. I am not a consultant who parachutes in and leaves. I care whether it works.
I know both worlds. I have an MBA and have spent years working inside small and large organisations across marketing, communications, content, strategy, design, retail, ecommerce, and customer experience. I have also grown up surrounded by small businesses: my family has run them across generations, and I have run my own. I know what it feels like to be the person making every decision, wearing every hat, and trying to do right by your customers while keeping everything else afloat.
That combination shapes how I work. I don’t bring a corporate framework and scale it down. I bring the thinking, and I apply it to what is actually happening in your business, in your context, with your customers. Small businesses need breadth, and I notice things quickly and find clear solutions to complicated problems.

CASE STUDY
From invisible to thriving:
20x sales growth over 6 years
A speciality paper wholesaler had closed their retail shop and moved online, but the website was not working. Sales were less than $1,000 a month, new customers could not find the business at all, and those who did rarely bought. The wholesale side alone was not enough to carry the business forward.
I looked at the whole picture from the customer’s perspective: the website, the product presentation, the in-person browsing experience, the communications. The marketing wasn’t connecting because it had been built from the inside, around what the business knew about itself, not around how customers were trying to find and buy from it.
Changes were made gradually, in layers, within the real constraints of a small team. New customers could find the business. The experience of buying, online and in person, finally made sense. Six years later, monthly retail sales have not dropped below $20,000 and are still growing, slowly, sustainably, in a way the business can actually support.
The owner, who came into this hoping it would carry him through to retirement, is now having too much fun to stop.
